Why Fortnightly?
Fortnightly is the default pay cycle for most Australian workers, ahead of weekly pay and monthly pay. A fortnight is two weeks, so there are 26 pays in a standard year. Your employer withholds PAYG tax from each pay using the ATO fortnightly tax tables, so the total withheld across the year matches your annual income tax and Medicare levy.
Worked example, $90,000 salary:
Your annual take-home pay is $70,680 after $17,520 income tax and $1,800 Medicare levy. Divide that by 26 and you get about $2,718 per fortnight, and the same salary viewed yearly sits in the annual salary calculator. Your 12% super of $10,800 is paid on top, so it is not part of the take-home figure.
