How Income Tax Is Calculated
Australia uses a marginal (progressive) system. You do not pay one flat rate on your whole salary. Each slice of your income is taxed at the rate for its bracket, so only the income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate. Every rate and threshold is listed in the tax brackets 2026-27 guide, and the difference between the rate on your next dollar and your overall rate is covered in marginal vs average tax rate. Income tax is federal, so the result is the same in every state, as explained in is there state income tax in Australia.
Worked example, $90,000 salary:
The first $18,200 is tax-free. The slice from $18,201 to $45,000 is taxed at 15% ($4,020). The slice from $45,001 to $90,000 is taxed at 30% ($13,500). Total income tax is $17,520. On top of that, the 2% Medicare levy adds $1,800.
