How Superannuation Works

Superannuation is money set aside for your retirement. Your employer must pay the 12% Super Guarantee into your super fund, and it goes to the fund rather than your take-home pay. Adding your own pre-tax contributions on top is covered by the salary sacrifice calculator and salary sacrifice explained. How it appears depends on how your salary is quoted.

Salary that excludes super: the 12% is paid on top. On a $90,000 salary your employer super is $10,800 per year, about $415 per fortnight or $900 per month.

Package that includes super: the salary portion is the package divided by 1.12 and super is the rest. A $112,000 package including super is $100,000 salary plus $12,000 super.

Salary sacrifice lets you send extra before-tax pay into super, where it is taxed at a concessional 15% instead of your marginal rate, which can cut your total tax. Concessional contributions are capped at $32,500 for 2026-27.

Superannuation FAQ

Common questions about Australian superannuation.

It depends on how the salary is quoted. If your salary excludes super, the employer pays 12% super on top. If your salary is a package including super, the salary portion is the package divided by 1.12 and super is the rest. For example, a $112,000 package including super is $100,000 salary plus $12,000 super.
On a $90,000 salary that excludes super, your employer pays $10,800 of super for 2026-27 at the 12% Superannuation Guarantee rate. That is about $415 per fortnight or $900 per month, paid into your super fund on top of your pay. Enter your own salary above to see your exact figure.
Salary sacrifice is when you ask your employer to pay some of your before-tax salary into super instead of your bank account. It is taxed at a concessional 15% inside the fund rather than at your marginal rate, so it can cut your total tax. Concessional contributions are capped at $32,500 for 2026-27.
No. Employer super goes to your super fund, not your bank account, so it is not part of your take-home pay. It is taxed inside the fund at a concessional 15% rather than at your marginal rate, which is why salary sacrificing into super can reduce your total tax.
