On a $90,000 salary you take home about $1,359 a week in FY2026-27, after income tax and the Medicare levy. Super of $10,800 a year is paid on top.
The method

How is weekly pay calculated?

Tax is annual; the week is a division.

Your weekly take-home is your annual net pay divided by 52. Australia taxes income by financial year, so the calculation runs annually first: income tax on the 2026-27 scale, plus the 2% Medicare levy, plus any HECS-HELP repayment, subtracted from gross salary. The remainder splits across 52 weeks.

On $90,000 that is $17,520 income tax and $1,800 Medicare levy, leaving $70,680 for the year, or $1,359 a week. Your gross weekly pay is $1,730.77, so about $372 of each week goes to tax.

Your employer reaches almost the same number from the other direction, withholding from each payslip using the ATO Weekly tax table (NAT 1005). Withholding is the payday estimate; the annual calculation is what you actually owe. The two reconcile at tax time.

Common salaries

What is the take-home pay per week at common salaries?

Resident rates, no HECS-HELP, super excluded. Computed from the 2026-27 engine.

Comparison

How does weekly pay compare with fortnightly and monthly?

Same salary, same annual tax, different instalments. $90,000 shown.

Pay cyclePays per yearGross per payTake-home per pay
Weekly52$1,730.77$1,359
Fortnightly26$3,461.54$2,718
Monthly12$7,500.00$5,890

All three cycles pay the same $70,680 across the year. Only the instalment size changes.

Frequency changes cash flow, not tax. Weekly pay suits tight budgets because money arrives before most bills. See the fortnightly pay calculator for the most common Australian cycle, or the monthly pay calculator for salaried roles.

Minimum wage

What is weekly pay on the minimum wage?

The wage floor per week from 1 July 2026.

The National Minimum Wage is $1,004.90 per 38-hour week before tax, from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026 (Fair Work Commission, Annual Wage Review 2026 decision [2026] FWCFB 3500). Worked full-time for a year, that is about $870 a week after tax.

RateWeekly grossWeekly after tax (full-time year)
National Minimum Wage ($26.44/hour)$1,004.90$870
Entry-level C14 rate (first 6 months)$978.10$852
Casual on the NMW (25% loading)$1,255.90$1,037

After-tax figures assume the weekly rate is earned for all 52 weeks (resident, no HECS-HELP). Gross rates: Fair Work Ombudsman, "Minimum wages", updated 1 July 2026. See the minimum wage guide for who each rate covers.

Pay cycles

Who gets paid weekly in Australia?

The award decides, and the law sets a floor of at least monthly.

Your award or registered agreement usually fixes the pay cycle as weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Where it is silent, the Fair Work Act 2009 (section 323) requires payment at least monthly. Weekly pay is common in hospitality, retail, construction and labour hire, where hours change week to week and awards keep pay close to the work.

In practice fortnightly is Australia's most common cycle, followed by weekly, then monthly (Fair Work Ombudsman, "Frequency of pay", updated 22 October 2025). Whatever the cycle, a payslip must arrive within one working day of payday, showing gross pay, net pay, and for hourly staff the rate and hours paid (Fair Work Ombudsman, "Pay slips"). Our payslip guide walks through every required line.

Withheld vs owed

How much tax comes out of weekly pay?

The payslip number is an estimate of an annual liability.

On $90,000, about $372 of each weekly pay goes to tax and Medicare across the year. Your employer does not know your final annual income, so it withholds per pay from the ATO Weekly tax table (NAT 1005), built from the Schedule 1 withholding formulas (NAT 1004).

Withheld and owed are different numbers. Withholding assumes this week's pay repeats all year. Overtime-heavy weeks are over-withheld; unpaid leave under-withholds. The annual truth is settled when you lodge a return, which is why a big-overtime year often ends in a refund. If you have told your employer about a HECS-HELP debt, an extra slice is withheld per week toward your annual repayment.

Who this is for

Who uses this calculator?

Weekly numbers answer weekly questions.

Weekly-paid workers

Checking that the payslip landing every week matches what a $75,000 or $90,000 salary should actually deliver.

Budgeters

Rent is weekly in most of Australia. Converting a salary to a weekly net figure puts income and rent in the same units.

Job switchers

Comparing a new offer against current pay per week, the way it will actually be felt, rather than as annual gross.

Hourly workers annualising

1 July 2026

What changed on 1 July 2026?

Three changes show up in weekly pay this year.

The first income tax rate fell from 16% to 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000 (Income Tax Rates Amendment (Tax Reform No. 1) Act 2026). The ATO weekly withholding tables effective 1 July 2026 build the cut in, so weekly take-home rose slightly at every salary without anyone doing anything.

The National Minimum Wage rose to $1,004.90 a week and award minimums rose 4.75% (Fair Work Commission decision [2026] FWCFB 3500). And under Payday Super, the 12% super guarantee must now be paid each payday, so weekly-paid workers should see super land weekly too.

The new $1,000 standard work deduction (FY2026-27) does not change weekly withholding. It reduces taxable income at return time, arriving as a larger refund.

Watch for these

Common mistakes with weekly pay

Small errors that compound across 52 pays.

Multiplying weekly pay by 4 to get a month

A month averages 4.33 weeks, not 4. Weekly net times 4 understates monthly income by about 8%. Use annual net divided by 12, or the monthly pay calculator.

Treating weekly withholding as final tax

The Weekly tax table (NAT 1005) estimates your annual tax one payday at a time. Variable hours, second jobs and mid-year raises all push the estimate off. The true figure is annual, settled at lodgment.

Budgeting on gross

On $90,000, weekly gross is $1,730.77 but take-home is $1,359. Committing to rent on the first number leaves a $372 weekly hole.

Forgetting HECS-HELP

With a study loan, repayment on $90,000 is $3,071 for FY2026-27, about $59 a week. Weekly budgets built without it run short.

Questions

Weekly pay FAQ

Common questions about weekly pay in Australia.

On a $90,000 salary you take home about $1,359 a week in FY2026-27, after $17,520 income tax and $1,800 Medicare levy across the year. Super of $10,800 is paid on top, and a HECS-HELP debt would reduce the weekly figure further.
Your annual salary is taxed on the 2026-27 scale, then the net result is divided by 52. Your employer runs the same logic per payday using the ATO Weekly tax table (NAT 1005), so 52 weekly pays add up to roughly your annual net pay.
No. Pay frequency does not change your annual tax. The ATO scales its withholding tables so a weekly, fortnightly or monthly earner on the same salary pays the same total tax for the year. Only the size of each instalment differs.
The National Minimum Wage is $1,004.90 per 38-hour week ($26.44 an hour) from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026, per the Fair Work Commission Annual Wage Review 2026. Award minimums, which cover most workers, rose 4.75% at the same time.
Payday withholding uses the ATO Weekly tax table (NAT 1005), which rounds to whole dollars and builds in assumptions like the tax-free threshold claim. This calculator shows your annual liability averaged per week. Small gaps are normal and settle at tax time as a refund or bill.
Occasionally. A year is 52 weeks plus one or two days, so every few years a weekly payroll lands 53 paydays in one financial year. The ATO publishes guidance for the extra pay; slightly more tax can be withheld that year, and it reconciles at tax time.
