How Your Salary Becomes Take-Home Pay

This calculator works for any salary, from a part-time wage to a six-figure package. Type your gross salary in and it applies the 2026-27 ATO brackets to each slice of your income, takes off the 2% Medicare levy, and shows your net take-home pay. Super is added on top at 12%, because it is paid by your employer and is not part of the pay that reaches your bank account.

You do not pay one flat rate on your whole salary. The first $18,200 is tax-free, the next band is taxed at 15%, and only the income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate. That is why your average tax rate is always lower than your marginal rate.

Worked example, $100,000 salary: the income tax comes to $20,520 and the Medicare levy adds $2,000, leaving $77,480 take-home. Your marginal rate is 30%, but your average tax rate is only 22.5%.

Prefer to think in yearly terms? The annual salary calculator shows the same result as a clean gross-to-net figure. For a full deduction breakdown across every pay cycle, use the take-home pay calculator, and to isolate just the tax on your salary, see the income tax calculator.

Things to Get Right on a Salary

Small misreadings that change the take-home figure.

Base salary vs package

A salary quoted "including super" bundles the 12% guarantee. Divide by 1.12 to find the base that tax is actually calculated on, or use the gross to net calculator for the split.

Marginal rate vs what you pay

Your marginal rate on $100,000 is 30%, but the effective rate across tax and the levy is only 22.5%. The difference is explained in marginal vs average tax rate.

Leaving out the study loan

A HECS-HELP debt takes $3,071 from a $90,000 salary in 2026-27. Check yours with the HECS-HELP repayment calculator.

Overlooking the surcharge

Above $105,000 without private hospital cover, the Medicare levy surcharge adds 1% to 1.5% on top of the 2% Medicare levy.

Salary Calculator FAQ

Common questions about turning a salary into take-home pay.

On an $80,000 salary, an Australian resident pays $14,520 in income tax and a $1,600 Medicare levy for 2026-27. That leaves $63,880 take-home, with $9,600 of super paid on top by the employer. Enter your own salary above to see your exact figure.
A $100,000 salary leaves an Australian resident with $77,480 take-home in 2026-27, after $20,520 income tax and $2,000 Medicare levy. The employer also pays $12,000 into super, which sits on top and is not part of your take-home pay.
Yes. Super is shown separately because it is paid on top of your salary, not taken out of it. At the 12% super guarantee rate, a $100,000 salary attracts $12,000 of employer super in 2026-27. That money goes to your fund, so it never appears in your take-home pay.
Yes. Income tax and the Medicare levy are federal, so there is no state income tax in Australia. A $90,000 salary gives the same $70,680 take-home whether you live in Sydney, Perth or Hobart.
Take-home pay is your salary minus income tax and the 2% Medicare levy, plus any HECS-HELP repayment. On a $60,000 salary the income tax is $8,420 and the Medicare levy is $1,200, leaving $50,380 take-home for 2026-27. The calculator applies the ATO brackets to each slice of your income automatically.
A $90,000 salary leaves $70,680 take-home a year in 2026-27, which is about $2,718 per fortnight, $5,890 per month or $1,359 per week. Pay frequency changes the timing of your pay, not the yearly total the ATO taxes.
A study loan repayment is withheld on top of tax once you tick the loan box with your employer. On a $90,000 salary the 2026-27 repayment is $3,071, cutting take-home from $70,680 to $67,609. The repayment rises with income under the marginal HECS-HELP system.
