Police Officer Salary and Take-Home Pay in Australia

Police pay is the one major occupation with no modern award at all. Every rate is set by a state or territory enterprise agreement, starting around $84,060 to $88,169 for a probationary constable and reaching a representative median of $133,120, which nets $100,002 after tax for 2026-27.

There is no modern award for police officers. Any page quoting a police award rate is quoting something that does not exist. Pay is set force by force through enterprise agreements, which is why starting salaries differ by thousands between neighbouring states.

Probationary Constable Starting Salaries, 2026-27

Indicative 2026 department figures for the two jurisdictions where a current starting rate could be confirmed. Both are base salaries before shift penalties and allowances.

Australian resident, super paid on top of salary, no HECS-HELP debt, private hospital cover assumed so no Medicare levy surcharge. These are indicative department figures, not agreement schedules, and they exclude shift penalties, weekend rates, on-call and specialist allowances. Other states and territories are deliberately omitted: this research could not confirm a current published starting rate for them, and an estimate would be worse than a gap. Check your own force’s enterprise agreement for an exact figure.

Why There Is No Police Award

Almost every Australian occupation has a modern award setting a legal minimum. Retail has MA000004, nursing has MA000034, construction has MA000020. Police have nothing equivalent.

Police officers are employed under state and territory legislation rather than the general federal award system, and their pay is bargained directly between each police force and its police association. The result is eight separate pay systems with no common floor beneath them.

This matters practically. You cannot look up a police pay rate the way you look up an award rate, and you cannot use a national figure to check whether a state offer is reasonable. The only authoritative source is your own jurisdiction’s current enterprise agreement.

It also means the usual comparison shortcut fails. On most of our profession pages the useful move is to compare the award floor against the real median, because the gap tells you how much bargaining has achieved. For police there is no floor to compare against, so the starting rate itself is the benchmark.

On the representative median the marginal rate is 30% while the average rate is only 24.9%. See marginal vs average tax rate for why promotion through the rank scale costs less tax than the bracket implies, or check a specific figure with the salary calculator.

Allowances Are a Real Part of Police Pay

For an operational officer the base salary is a floor, not the total.

Police enterprise agreements generally provide a layered set of additions on top of base pay: shift penalties for afternoon and night work, higher rates for weekends and public holidays, on-call and recall provisions, and allowances attached to specialist duties or qualifications. An officer on a rotating operational roster can earn meaningfully more than the base figure suggests, while an officer in a weekday administrative posting may earn close to base.

That variation is why two officers on the same rank and increment can take home quite different amounts. It also means comparing a police offer to a standard weekday salary on base rates alone understates the police role. Read overtime and penalty rates for how loadings compound, and use the overtime calculator to model a specific roster.

Progression works differently too. Movement is through incremental steps within a rank and then through promotion to sergeant and above, each with its own scale in the agreement. The $44,951 distance between a NSW starting salary and the representative median is that progression, accumulated over years, rather than any single increase.

Tax position

What the Median Salary Means for Tax

At $133,120 a police officer sits in a bracket where two things start to matter.

The first is the Medicare levy surcharge. It applies above the income threshold to anyone without an appropriate level of private hospital cover, and it is charged on your whole income rather than just the amount over the line. That makes it a genuine cliff rather than a gradual increase. Every figure on this page assumes cover is held. See the MLS explained or run your position through the MLS calculator.

The second is salary sacrifice. At a 30% marginal rate, pre-tax super contributions are taxed at 15% in the fund instead of your marginal rate, which is the widest that gap gets before the Division 293 threshold. See salary sacrifice explained or model it with the salary sacrifice calculator.

Watch out

Common Mistakes With Police Pay

Where published figures go wrong for this occupation specifically.

Looking for a police award rate

There is no modern award for police. If a site quotes one, it has confused police with a public sector or security award. Only the state enterprise agreement applies.

Applying one state’s figure to another

With no national floor, jurisdictions diverge. NSW and Victoria differ by about $4,109 at probationary level alone.

Reading the median as a starting salary

$133,120 is a middle across all ranks and years of service. A probationary constable starts roughly $44,951 below it.

Ignoring allowances in a job comparison

Shift penalties, weekend rates and on-call provisions are a real share of operational earnings and are excluded from every base figure here.

Assuming the standard super rate

Some jurisdictions run legacy or closed defined-benefit schemes for officers who joined before a cut-off. Those do not behave like a 12% accumulation fund.

Overlooking the Medicare levy surcharge

Above the threshold without private hospital cover, the surcharge applies to your whole income, not just the excess. It is a cliff, not a slope.

Police Pay FAQ

Common questions about police officer salaries and take-home pay in Australia.

The ABS representative full-time median for police is $133,120 a year ($2,560 a week), which nets $100,002 after income tax and the 2% Medicare levy for 2026-27. Starting pay is much lower: a probationary constable in New South Wales starts on about $88,169 and in Victoria about $84,060. The $44,951 gap between a NSW starting rate and the median reflects rank progression, incremental steps and shift allowances rather than a single pay rise.
No, and this is the single most important thing to understand about police pay. There is no modern award covering police officers. Pay and conditions are set entirely by state and territory police enterprise agreements, negotiated between each police force and its police association or union. Any website quoting an "award rate" for police is wrong, because no such instrument exists.
Because each jurisdiction bargains separately. There is no national floor to anchor the rates, so the starting salary, the increment structure, the rank scale and the allowance regime are all negotiated force by force. That produces wider variation than you see in occupations governed by a single national award, and it means a figure from one state tells you very little about another.
Yes, and the base salary alone understates total earnings for most operational officers. Enterprise agreements typically provide shift penalties, weekend and public holiday rates, on-call and recall allowances, and specialist duty allowances. For an officer on a rotating operational roster these can be a substantial addition to the base figure. The salaries on this page are base rates and exclude all of it.
Most police are covered by the standard 12% super guarantee, paid on top of salary. Some jurisdictions operate legacy or closed defined-benefit schemes for officers who joined before a cut-off date, and those work differently from an accumulation fund. On the $88,169 NSW starting salary the standard 12% is $10,580 a year. Check your own scheme rather than assuming the standard rate applies.
It can. The Medicare levy surcharge applies to anyone above the income threshold without an appropriate level of private hospital cover, and it is charged on the whole income, not just the amount above the threshold. Every take-home figure on this page assumes private hospital cover is held, so no surcharge applies. See the Medicare levy surcharge guide for the current thresholds and rates.
