pay-calculator.au targets WCAG 2.2 Level AA. This statement records what has been built to meet that standard, which parts have not been verified by a formal audit, and how to report a barrier. It is written to be checkable rather than reassuring, because an accessibility statement that only lists successes is not useful to the person who cannot use the page.
1. The standard being targeted
The target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 at Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium. In Australia, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 makes access to online services a legal obligation, and the Australian Government’s Digital Service Standard adopts WCAG at Level AA as its benchmark.
2. Current conformance status
Partially conformant, self-assessed. Partially conformant means most of the standard is met but some parts are not yet confirmed. Self-assessed means this status comes from internal testing, not from an independent audit. No third-party accessibility audit has been commissioned for this site. That is stated plainly here rather than left for a reader to discover, because a claim of full conformance without an audit behind it would be a claim this site cannot support.
3. What has been implemented
Each item below is present in the shipped site and can be checked directly:
- A working skip link.The first focusable element on every page is a “Skip to content” link that moves keyboard focus, not just scroll position, past the navigation.
- Declared page language. Every page declares
lang="en-AU", so screen readers use Australian English pronunciation for amounts and terms. - Visible focus indicators. Interactive elements carry a visible focus style, so a keyboard user can always see where they are.
- Reduced-motion support. Animation is suppressed for visitors whose system requests reduced motion.
- Labelled controls and live regions. Calculator inputs carry programmatic labels, and results that update without a page load are announced to screen readers rather than changing silently.
- Semantic structure. Pages use real headings in order, real tables with header cells for rate and threshold data, and real landmark elements, so a screen reader user can navigate by structure instead of reading linearly.
- Calculators work without cookies. Every calculation runs in the browser, so blocking cookies or storage does not disable any tool on the site.
4. Known gaps and unverified areas
These are the areas where this site does not yet have evidence of conformance. They are listed because an honest gap is more useful than an untested claim:
- Colour contrast has not been audited across every component. The palette was designed with contrast in mind, but no full automated or manual sweep of every text and background combination has been run and recorded.
- No assistive-technology testing has been recorded. The site has not been formally tested end to end with NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver, so screen-reader behaviour on the more complex calculator widgets is unconfirmed.
- Wide data tables need horizontal scrolling on small screens. The withholding and award-rate tables carry many columns. They scroll horizontally on a phone, which is usable but is not the same as a layout designed for that width.
- Third-party content is outside this site’s control. Where a page links to an ATO or Fair Work document, the accessibility of that document is determined by the organisation publishing it.
5. How to report a barrier
Email info@pay-calculator.au or use the contact page. A report is most useful when it includes the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you were using. Reports about a barrier that stops someone completing a calculation are treated as defects, not suggestions, and are prioritised accordingly.
If a response is unsatisfactory, a complaint can be made to the Australian Human Rights Commission, which handles complaints under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 at humanrights.gov.au/complaints.
6. Review of this statement
This statement is reviewed whenever the site’s layout or calculator components change materially, and at minimum once each financial year alongside the annual rate review described in the editorial and corrections policy. The Updated date in the header changes when the content of this statement changes, not on every deploy.
