A full-time year on the 2026-27 National Minimum Wage is $52,255 gross and $45,229 after tax, which is $3,769 a month, $1,740 a fortnight or $870 a week. The employer pays $6,271 of super on top.
The headline answer

What Is the Minimum Wage in Australia Per Year?

One rate, five periods, gross and after tax.

The National Minimum Wage is $26.44 an hour and $1,004.90 a week for a full-time 38-hour week, from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026 (Fair Work Commission, Annual Wage Review 2026, decision [2026] FWCFB 3500). Multiplied across 52 weeks that is $52,255 a year gross, and $45,229 a year after income tax and the Medicare levy for an Australian resident claiming the tax-free threshold.

PeriodGross payAfter taxSuper on top

Per fortnight$2,010$1,740$241
Per month$4,355$3,769$523
Per year$52,255$45,229$6,271

Australian resident, tax-free threshold claimed, no study loan, 52 paid weeks. The monthly and fortnightly figures are the annual amount divided by 12 and 26, which is how payroll actually works: four weekly pays is $4,020, not a month. Computed from the pay-calculator.au 2026-27 tax engine.

Where the money goes

What Does the Minimum Wage Pay After Tax?

13.4% of a full-time minimum wage year goes to tax and the levy.

On $52,255 of taxable income, income tax after the Low Income Tax Offset is $5,980 and the 2% Medicare levy is $1,045, so $7,025 leaves the pay across the year and $45,229 stays. The average tax rate is 13.4%, against a marginal rate of 30% on the next dollar earned. The gap between those two rates is explained in the guide to marginal vs average tax rates.

Full-time year on the National Minimum Wage, 2026-27Amount
Gross pay ($1,004.90 for 52 weeks)$52,255
Income tax, after the Low Income Tax Offset$5,980
Medicare levy (2%)$1,045
Compulsory HECS-HELP repayment$0
Take-home pay for the year$45,229
Average tax rate13.4%
Super guarantee paid on top (12%)+$6,271
Total package including super$58,525

Three things keep the tax low at this income: the first $18,200 is tax-free, the $18,201 to $45,000 band is taxed at 15% for 2026-27, and the Low Income Tax Offset trims the result. Super is paid by the employer on top of the wage and never appears in take-home pay; see the superannuation calculator.

Part-time hours

What If You Do Not Work 38 Hours a Week?

The same $26.44 rate, at 20, 25, 30 and 38 hours.

The $1,004.90 weekly figure assumes 38 ordinary hours, the standard full-time week under the National Employment Standards. Part-time employees are paid the same hourly rate for fewer hours, and because tax is progressive the take-home share rises as hours fall: at 20 hours a week the average tax rate is 2.5%, against 13.4% at 38 hours.

Hours a weekGross per weekGross per yearTake-home per yearTake-home per fortnightAverage tax rate
20$528.80$27,498$26,803$1,0312.5%

38 (full-time)$1,004.90$52,255$45,229$1,74013.4%

Part-time rows use the $26.44 hourly rate across 52 paid weeks. The 38-hour row uses the published weekly rate of $1,004.90, because Fair Work publishes both figures and they do not reconcile exactly: 38 times $26.44 is $1,004.72, eighteen cents short of the weekly rate. The weekly rate governs a full-time week. At 20 hours a week the income sits below the Medicare levy low-income threshold, so no levy applies at all. Change the hours in the calculator above, or use the hourly pay calculator for a different rate.

Geography

Is the Minimum Wage After Tax Different in Each State?

No. One national wage, one federal tax system, one answer.

The after-tax minimum wage is the same in every state and territory. There are two reasons, and both are national. The Fair Work Commission sets a single National Minimum Wage for employees in the national workplace relations system, not a rate per state. And income tax in Australia is levied only by the Commonwealth: no state or territory has an income tax of its own, so the deductions applied to $1,004.90 a week are identical everywhere. The full explanation, including why payroll tax is an employer tax that never touches a payslip, is in is there state income tax in Australia.

State or territoryGross per yearTake-home per yearTake-home per month
New South Wales$52,255$45,229$3,769
Victoria$52,255$45,229$3,769
Queensland$52,255$45,229$3,769
Western Australia$52,255$45,229$3,769
South Australia$52,255$45,229$3,769
Tasmania$52,255$45,229$3,769
Australian Capital Territory$52,255$45,229$3,769
Northern Territory$52,255$45,229$3,769

Every row is identical on purpose. A search for a state-specific minimum wage calculator is looking for a number that does not vary. What genuinely does differ between states is long service leave, public holidays and payroll tax thresholds, none of which change the arithmetic above. See long service leave by state.

Casual work

What Does the Minimum Wage Pay a Casual?

About $33.05 an hour, and it is not a pay rise.

A casual employee on the National Minimum Wage is paid the base rate plus a 25% casual loading, which is about $33.05an hour from 1 July 2026 (Fair Work Ombudsman, Casual employees, updated 12 May 2026). The loading compensates for entitlements casuals do not receive: paid annual leave, paid personal and carer’s leave, notice of termination and redundancy pay.

Two adjustments matter before comparing a casual rate with a permanent one. A casual is paid only for weeks actually worked, so a 52-week annualisation overstates a real casual year. And the loaded rate must be divided by 1.25 before it is held against a permanent rate, or the comparison counts the leave twice. The casual loading calculator does both, and casual loading explained covers what the 25% actually trades away.

Study loans

Do You Repay HECS-HELP on the Minimum Wage?

No. A full-time minimum wage year sits $17,273 below the threshold.

The 2026-27 compulsory repayment threshold for study and training support loans is $69,528 of repayment income (ATO, Study and training support loans rates and repayment thresholds, updated 30 June 2026). A full-time year on the National Minimum Wage is $52,255, so the compulsory repayment is $0, and it stays at nil at every hours figure in the table above.

An STSL line can still appear on a minimum wage payslip, because employers withhold against expected annual earnings rather than against the year actually worked. Anything withheld above the assessed repayment comes back in the refund once the return is lodged. That gap is the whole subject of STSL on your payslip, and the per-pay arithmetic is on the HECS repayment per pay page.

The bigger floor

Is an Award Rate Higher Than the Minimum Wage?

Usually, and most Australian workers are on one.

The National Minimum Wage applies only to employees covered by neither a modern award nor a registered agreement, which is a small share of the workforce. Everyone else has a higher floor set by their award classification. The Hospitality Industry (General) Award Level 1 is exactly $1,004.90 a week, matching the National Minimum Wage, while General Retail Level 1 is $1,056.80 a week and a first-year nursing assistant is $1,050.70 a week.

If a modern award covers your industry and your role, the award rate is your legal minimum, and it comes with penalty rates, overtime and allowances the National Minimum Wage says nothing about. Start at award rates Australia, or go straight to retail award rates, hospitality award rates or nursing award rates.

Questions

Minimum Wage After Tax FAQ

The yearly, monthly and after-tax questions people actually search for.

A full-time year on the National Minimum Wage is $52,255 gross for 2026-27: $1,004.90 a week for 52 weeks, at $26.44 an hour for 38 hours. After income tax of $5,980 and a Medicare levy of $1,045, the take-home figure is $45,229 a year. The employer pays $6,271 of superannuation on top of the wage, not out of it.
$4,355 a month gross, and $3,769 a month after tax, on a full-time 38-hour week at the 2026-27 National Minimum Wage. A month is the annual figure divided by 12, not four weekly pays: four weeks of $1,004.90 is $4,020, which is less than a real month because a year holds 52 weeks, not 48.
About $870 a week after income tax and the Medicare levy, from a gross $1,004.90. The average tax rate across a full-time minimum wage year is 13.4%, well below any headline bracket rate, because the first $18,200 is tax-free, the next band is taxed at 15% for 2026-27, and the Low Income Tax Offset reduces the bill again.
Yes for employees in the national workplace relations system, and the after-tax figure is identical everywhere regardless. The Fair Work Commission sets one National Minimum Wage for the whole country, and income tax, the Medicare levy and the super guarantee are all federal. No state or territory levies its own income tax, so the same gross wage produces the same take-home pay in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Darwin.
No. The 2026-27 compulsory repayment threshold for study and training support loans is $69,528 of repayment income, and a full-time minimum wage year is $52,255, so no compulsory repayment is due. If your employer is still withholding an STSL amount from each pay at this income, it will come back in your refund when the return is assessed.
A casual on the National Minimum Wage gets the base rate plus a 25% casual loading, which is about $33.05 an hour from 1 July 2026. The loading replaces paid annual leave, paid personal and carer's leave, notice of termination and redundancy pay, so it is compensation rather than a premium. A casual is also only paid for weeks actually worked, so annualising a casual rate over 52 weeks overstates a real casual year.
Before tax. Both $26.44 an hour and $1,004.90 a week are gross figures. Income tax and the Medicare levy come out of them, and the 12% super guarantee is paid on top of them by the employer. Fair Work publishes only the gross rate, which is why the annual figure quoted in the news is always higher than the amount that reaches a bank account.
